Old Town - The old town represents typical mountain architecture with its porches and narrow streets. The Town Hall, or “Casa de la Vila”, in the Main Square is an 18 th Century building and is a monumental construction with vegetal plaster decorated balconies. Abbatial Palace was once an ancient residence of the Lavaix monks (nowadays the building is under the Escales Dam waters). This gothic construction dates back from the 15 th Century. Next to the ancient church, built in the Romanesque and rebuilt in the Baroque, serves currently as the Museum of the Ribagorça Religious Art Collection.
Assumption Church – is the new church of the Pont de Suert. Built in 1955, it is a masterpiece of Eduardo Torroja Miret.
The Church is a joint f different volumes. The first one belongs to the nave and on the left side there are chapels of the Santissim, the Baptistery and the Sacristy. The church gives the impression of an overturned ship where the big cross above looks as if its tiller. The apse looks like it is part of the stern. Overall the church resembles the Noah's Arch. The church tower is as high as 16 meters and is regarded as a lighthouse guiding Christians to the church. |
